January Cure: Landing Strip

Okay, but first I need to get fresh gas in the tractor. Once I coerce the engine into starting I’ll be able to scrape a good straight landing strip for John’s remote control plane. Oh. Sorry. Not that kind of landing strip. Jargon often confuses me, as it is often meant to do. Jargon is also often meant to make a speaker or writer sound more intellectual or a product more effective or important than any other product in the history of human invention. There is no ill will involved in calling a place to unload when entering the house a landing strip, it just sounds cooler than dump zone. There are much more annoying and dangerous sorts of jargon, but I will, never-the-less, be calling it a place to unload or a place to hang my keys and sort mail.

I have to head out this morning to get baskets that I didn’t have yesterday to organize the items left in my bathroom cabinet. I’ve already gone through and tidied the kitchen, desk and bedroom (insert head pat here) so that I’ll be leaving and hopefully returning to a still clean home. This hinges on the behavior of the dastardly dachshund duo while I’m away. While I’m out I’ll see if I can find a suitable mail/key holder that will fit the few places I have to put such a thing. I’ll figure it out. I’ll take measurements of a couple of spots before I go, but it’s highly likely that whatever container I find for my unloading zone will end up on top of the washing machine.

I sort junk mail out before I even enter my house and drop it in the dumpster on my way through the garage. Thank all the gods I have a dumpster because I really don’t want to have a trash can near wherever my unloading zone ends up. I would have to stare at it all day. Under the sink, fine, tucked into the space between bed and nightstand, fine, hidden behind the toilet is fine. I’m also not apt to hang purses or coats or clothing on my walls. Coats go on coat racks behind the laundry door out of sight. Purses are hung on a rack behind a closet door in my bedroom, also out of sight. Such things are tools to me, not decor.

If I didn’t have closets, out of the way niches, or doors to hide non-decor items behind, I’d either build something or resort to plastic bins camouflaged with a cloth with decor items on top. I know, it’d be easier to hang my purses along a wall rather than to dig them out of a covered bin, but that’s me. I don’t want to stare at purses, or a hanging file for mail, or even keys for that matter.

So, off I go to brave the road construction that baffles and confuses the already baffled and confused snow birds in Surprise. Hot diggity dog.

Well, my foray into town was only marginally successful. I did find inexpensive containers to corral the cosmetics and facial cleansers. I’m not in love with them, but they’re doing their job.

I stopped at Walgreens and loaded up on voodoo and snake oil products to help me live in better harmony with my wrinkles. We’ll see. I’m sitting here with a freshly cleansed face, Retinol soaking into my crinkles, and moisturizer moisturizing.

I applied my entire daily allotment of imagination trying to find something I can live with as an organizer for keys and mail but was unsuccessful. Thus, here is the before and after picture of my place to drop stuff. Mail and keys are to be found there henceforth. If I can find or build something relatively attractive to sit there for sorting mail, great, if not, at least it’s in one spot. The crate at the edge of the frame holds our umbrellas and flashlights. Behind the door is where my barn coat hangs currently, but if/when I remove that door I’ll probably do something illogical like oh, I dunno, hang it in my closet where it actually belongs.

beforecabinetpurgeAmy (left) and Sheldon (right) inspect the jumbled pile of fascinating smells in my bathroom cabinet.

Today was the day to purge and clean out the dreaded bathroom cabinet. I had to run errands this morning. The ponies appreciate being fed and I’d already put buying pony chow off way longer than I’m comfortable with. I had to drop off a trunk load of recycling. Then, I had to make an emergency stop at Sally’s Beauty Supply. After errands I was already tired, so I really had no sense of humor left for the cabinet purge. Honestly, if I have to get down on the floor to do anything before I tile the bedroom, it’s likely not going to get done. I’m willing to throw my hip out of joint and be in bed for a week for the sake of better flooring, but not for another cabinet. Nope. No way.

Regardless of my unbending hip and back. I purged and purged more and purged still more. I found all kinds of cool stuff, not so cool stuff, and just plain stupid stuff under there. I guess I was hoping to haul out the non-working steam curler machine one day and pray/chant/sing it back into working order. Instead, I added a stop at Sally’s to my errand list this morning and pitched the useless one this afternoon. I pitched two perfectly good curling irons because if I even try to blow my hair dry from a distance it feels like straw. I will probably never need to buy more disposable razors ever because I unearthed 4 mostly full packs.

No, I did not purge the makeup yet. I haven’t bought makeup in 4 years but prior to that I invested heavily. I tried. I really did. All I could see was BIG BUCKS AT ULTA going into that garbage bag and I just couldn’t do it. Even though my face has sagged, bagged and wrinkled to the point of making wearing makeup ridiculous, I just couldn’t do it.

The other thing I didn’t do, again, was read ahead on the schedule to see that this project was coming up. If I had, I’d have gone out and found inexpensive baskets to better organize what didn’t get pitched.

All I could do was semi-organize. Moisturizers, makeup (cough) and other things that swore they’d defy my early aging (I didn’t purge those either. Hope springs eternal) behind one door. My new steam curler set behind the middle door. Shampoos, conditioners, soaps, hand sanitizers and mouthwash behind door number three. I moved all but a couple of cleaners to the newly organized crates in the laundry room.

aftercabinetpurgeAfter the cabinet purge. I swear to you I purged. It will look better with baskets. Really.

Proof

cabinetpurgebagI told you I purged. That’s a lawn and leaf bag three quarters full and almost too heavy for me to lift.

There were mostly empty cleaner bottles, empty cleaner bottles, moisturizers that no longer pumped they were so old, conditioners that only left my hair limp, stuff in generic travel bottles I could not identify. Old medications, medical supplies, nose hair trimmer, a non-working electric shaver, battery power toothbrushes, and an inordinate number of mostly used up Magic Erasers. In spite of the after picture still looking cluttered, I can actually see what I have in there now. The baskets to organize will make it much better. Seriously.

I also need to Google and YouTube my little aged heart out to see what makeup and shampoos will work for me now. If I find something that works, I’ll be willing to pry the stuff from Ulta and Bare Minerals out of my clenched fists. But not a ruddy moment before.

January Cure of the Addams Family Bedroom

tiedyecurtainsOne of the best mistakes I made last year was dip dying a cotton painters drop cloth to use as a patio curtain. It was a mistake at the time. The colors didn’t come out as I’d hoped, they ran together in spots I didn’t want them to run together, and they faded badly in the wash. Not the look I was going for on the patio. I had to buy more drop cloths to dye for the patio using better dyes and a simpler technique, but was so sick of dye (my legs and arms were the colors of the desert sunset) by then that I haven’t done them yet. I’d put the finished one in a closet until I decided how and where to use it. I was considering using it as a tarp in the barn, but when I held it up to the light, it showed an inkling of magic. It’s first in-house use was as a bedspread the cat couldn’t destroy. It’s best use so far, however, is as a curtain that brings the lovely colors of an AriDzona dawn into my room in the morning. It’s quite thick enough for privacy and to help keep the room cool, yet shear enough for the sun to light up the cheerful colors. I never thought I’d like these colors in my room, but I’ve actually enjoyed them. My first weekend task, was running the curtain through the washer and dryer while I scrubbed the window.

On my final day of the bedroom cure, I’d planned to have my son vacuum and mop the ceiling, clean the ceiling fan blades and take the glass off the light fixture so that I could wash it well. Unfortunately, he had to work and I don’t have a wheelchair that will jack me up five feet off the ground to do those things, so I just didn’t look up.

I vacuumed under and behind everything, cleaned my switch plates, and put the final coat of paint on my closet door and the door that leads to the patio. Those two doors, clean walls and woodwork, have upgraded the level of cozy in this room to a point I’d forgotten existed.

painteddoorsfinishedSince the only one that used that door to the patio was my husband, I’m going to find a nice palm or something to put in that corner and perhaps a framed nature photo or two.

Other than adding a couple of wall shelves (a project I decided upon while cleaning and ramming my wheelchair into the bookshelf) repairing and repainting the walls and finally laying tile in there this spring, the bedroom is done. My son is off work today and is picking up a friend of his to spend the day out here at the farm. He’s promised to clean my fan and ceiling before he leaves.

For the first time, in over a year, I won’t have to run around cleaning hysterically before company comes over. My kitchen is still clean, desk is still clean and organized, I dusted the den yesterday when I ran out of things I could reach in my bedroom, and my bedroom is so tidy and pretty that I can even leave the door open while company is here. Thanks to the Cure and the inspirations and encouragements from everyone participating in the discussions.

bedroomeastviewbedroomnorthviewbedroomthroughdoorNo, I didn’t miss anything when I was vacuuming under the bed. What you see under the edge of the bed is the blankie the dastardly dachshund duo dragged under there for their snoozing comfort. They wake up long enough to eat and then go back to bed. Yes I am jealous.

January Cure Bedroom Day 2

painteddoorsThere wasn’t really much to take a picture of today except that I did actually get the first coat of paint on the two door frames. Although I worked myself crazy in there today, this is the only thing that made an eye popping difference. I took a picture yesterday of this corner when I was clearing the boxes of stuff that shows the green corner they once were.

redbeansI would have never done the doors the same color as the walls by choice. At the time this room was painted, my husband was going through his first cancer experience which required tandem bone marrow transplants. Our insurance had dropped us like a hot rock the minute he was diagnosed (back then they were allowed to do that) and his treatments ate every bit of our substantial savings as well as a great wad of his mother’s. The transplants would remove all of his immunities to everything which meant we could have no germs in the house. I needed to repaint with something that would stand up to being scrubbed constantly with Clorox and Lysol. At the same time, I couldn’t afford to buy extra gallons just for trims. Add to that, I had the two weeks he was hospitalized to accomplish a germ free, easily cleaned house. This is why the floor in there is bare concrete. I had to rip up the carpet. We’d planned to tile the bedroom last winter but, of course, the second cancer intervened. It’s on his to-do list and one of the things I’ll be learning to do after the Cure is over.

The rest of my bedroom duty today was vacuuming the walls and scrubbing them clean. Because they’re painted with semi-gloss I can clean the tar out of them with just about anything I want.  My oldest son gave me an awesome tip years ago. Scrubbing Bubbles. I don’t think I’d try it on dainty flat paint but on a nice slick semi-gloss it works like a charm. Spray the stuff on, wipe it around evenly with a sponge mop or rag, then go over it a couple of times to rinse. You’re done, it’s quick, and boy does it work. It goes a lot faster for people without orthopaedic problems but it’s still pretty darned quick.

Oh and I did vacuum the cobwebs off the Addams Family ceiling light. I’ll have to get John to vacuum and mop the ceiling, clean the fan blades and get the glass off the lights so I can wash them. While he’s doing that, I’ll add the second coat of paint to the doors and launder the linens.

I’m considering building shelves for the area where the old book shelf is. I’m building the dastardly dachshund duo a couple of doggie beds out of the drawers from an old dresser and have no particularly good place to put them that will be out of the way of my wheelchair. If I put up shelves, I’ll free up floor space for the doggie beds on that wall. It’s anyone’s guess if the dachshunds will actually sleep in those beds, or if they’ll just dig the stuffing out of the fluffy dog mattresses I’ll be putting in them. I’m going to finish the dog beds before the yard sale just in case.

January Cure: Three Days in the Bedroom

My husband once conjectured that pens morph into clothes hangers when you need pens and clothes hangers shape shift into pens when you need to hang a sweater. I have evidence to prove his theory. I corralled all the pens into the pen and pencil basket during my frantic five minute desk sweep earlier this week. Today one of my first tasks in the three day bedroom marathon (not the fun kind) was to hang up and put away the mountain of clothes at the foot of the bed so I could find the bed to change the linens. I hauled out all the spare hangers in the closet, worked my way through Mt. Sweatsuitntowel in good time and ended up with two sweaters and a pair of jeans without hangers. There were, however, three pens on my now cleared bedspread. Proof that clothes hangers turn into pens and proof that if you don’t hang up your clean clothes they’ll protect you from spearing yourself on a Bic in the night.

The problem areas in my bedroom include everything. Thus, I started in the corner by the window and worked my way around the room counter clockwise, moving boxes, vacuuming where the boxes had been, moving nightstands, vacuuming under nightstands, cleaning and polishing nightstands, the TV armoire and the bookshelf. I had just dusted and polished the armoire and the nightstands a week ago. The picture at the top of this post shows how much dust I get in this house. Everyone does out here. It’s not just me, at least that’s what I remind myself daily. We live in the desert, along the edge of a dry wash, on a gravel road. Dust hangs in the air and often obscures the mountains ten miles to the south. It creeps in vents, windows, doors, and comes in on clothing. Forget taking shoes off at the door. You don’t know how lucky you are if that’s all it takes to keep your floors clean. We’d have to strip and hose off before entering to keep from dragging in dust, dirt and bits of hay and this wouldn’t stop dust from coming into the house. The upside is, I’ll know if anything is missing because there will be a dust free spot.

I purged more books, more movies, and dear lord lugged a 70 lb cardboard box filled with model magazines, modelling books, history books, space and science mags, and old games into the out room. I did this while dodging dogs, dog toys and furniture. In my manual wheelchair. Backwards. Eat your heart out Ginger Rogers.

redbeansBehind that giant box of yard sale goods I made several discoveries.  I discovered yet another box of DVDs from when I purged the closet last year and I discovered I’d not actually eaten all the canned red beans my best friend shipped me from Louisiana as comfort food after my husband passed away. I also discovered his favorite pair of beat up old sneakers and discovered I still can’t part with them yet. Keeping them feels like he’ll be back soon.

I think the toughest thing I did today was cleaning the bookshelf. It wasn’t difficult physically. It’s a cruddy little bookshelf we kept DVDs and his books and whatnot on because our real bookshelves were holding up his books in other parts of the house. I’d already purged most of his books from that shelf last fall. Amid the histories of various wars and how-to books on modelling, I found the last book he read. The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. It brought me to tears when I found it and it did so again today. One day I’ll have the strength of heart to read it, but not today.

tidybookshelfafter

I didn’t want to put too much back on the bookshelf as I hope to move one of the nicer ones into that spot by Sunday and fill it with meaningful, comforting things. Useful things can go wherever useful things go, but my room needs to be something that gives me warm hugs and reminds me of the good things in my life and in the world.

I had lots of help today even though John was at work. I had to get down on the floor to deep clean the nightstands and the instant I did…

Here is a before picture of my Addams Family ceiling fixture.

addamsfamilyfixtureI can’t reach it, John will have to clean it and hand me the glass to wash. But it will get done by Sunday night. For now, I’m just leaving the light off and not looking up while I’m in bed. This has worked since my husband became ill. I really haven’t given a damn about much since he got sick. My patio and backyard projects last year helped me care about the outside of the house. The Cure is helping me care again about the inside of the house.
